Supported File Systems

O&O DiskImage supports a variety of file systems, ensuring broad applicability across different storage media. Here are the main file systems listed:

File System Explanation
FAT FAT (File Allocation Table) is one of the oldest file systems, developed for MS-DOS and early Windows versions. It is particularly suited for removable media and is still used due to its simple structure and compatibility with many operating systems.
FAT32 FAT32 extends the capabilities of FAT by supporting larger volumes and files, making it ideal for older Windows operating systems like Windows 95b/98/Me. FAT32 offers improved storage utilization and is widespread on external storage devices.
NTFS NTFS (New Technology File System) was introduced with Windows NT and provides advanced features including support for large volumes, file permissions, and data recovery. NTFS is the preferred file system for modern Windows versions due to its robustness and security features.
exFAT exFAT was specifically developed for flash memory such as USB drives and SD cards and offers higher efficiency and capacity compared to FAT32. It is ideal for devices with very large files and volumes and is commonly used in digital cameras and smartphones.
Note:
With O&O DiskImage, you can back up the occupied sectors of all supported file systems. If a volume or partition with an unknown file system is found, O&O DiskImage automatically performs a forensic backup, i.e., a backup of all sectors. To manually perform a forensic backup, select the forensic backup option in the Backup Options instead of backing up the used sectors.
